The Collectible Life of Mignon Faget

The exhibition, “The Collectible Life of Mignon Faget” was on display at the West Baton Rouge Museum from August 1, 2020 through January 3, 2021. The exhibit features personal collections of Mignon Faget jewelry as she marks her 50th anniversary as an artist.

Collectibility is as integral to the designs of artist Mignon Faget (b. 1933-) as are the seashell, plant and architectural forms that epitomize her work. Her close observation of the natural world, particularly the Gulf Coast of the United States, as well as the built environment of her native New Orleans, Louisiana forged her iconic style. More than 200,000 collectors support her 50-year career.

Faget is a fifth-generation New Orleanian from a Creole family. Her understanding of her native New Orleans as a layered and mysterious place that stands apart from the mainstream informs her careful selection of objects to transform through her artistry. Her associations with professors at Newcomb College, St. Mary’s Dominican College, and Tulane University influenced her pursuit of an artistic career as well as her philosophies of design

Series such as Sea, Knots (1976), Zea (1988), Romanesque Return (1990), and Sea Revisited (2019) demonstrate Faget’s rigorous and disciplined exploration of silver and gold.

Collectors respond to the inherent value of Faget’s source materials and artistry. Gathered in conversation, vintage and recent designs express personal narrative.
