Book Club with the West Baton Rouge Parish Library and the West Baton Rouge Museum

Saturday, November 16, 2019

Come join the West Baton Rouge Parish Library and the West Baton Rouge Museum for a book discussion and a walk through of our newest exhibit, "One Half the People: Advancing Equality for Women"

Join the West Baton Rouge Library Book Club at the West Baton Rouge Museum for a special scholar-led discussion on Saturday, November 16, 2019 from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The event will coincide with the museum’s exhibit on loan from the National Archives, “One Half of the People: Advancing Equality for Women.”

The club will be discussing, Votes for Women!: American Suffragists and the Battle for the Ballot by Winifred Conkling (Published 2018). For nearly 150 years, American women did not have the right to vote. On August 18, 1920, they won that right, when the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified at last. To achieve that victory, some of the fiercest, most passionate women in history marched, protested, and sometimes even broke the law—for more than eight decades. Votes for Women! explores suffragists’ often powerful, sometimes difficult relationship with the intersecting temperance and abolition campaigns, and includes an unflinching look at some of the uglier moments in women’s fight for the vote. Discussion of the book will be led by Dr. Olivia Pass.

Dr. Olivia McNeely Pass has taught both on the high school and college levels. She taught for twenty-two years in the public school system and earned both a master’s in English and one in journalism. After receiving her doctorate in English and American literature from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, she taught for Louisiana State University in Eunice and then Nicholls State from which she retired as a full professor in 2004. Since retirement she has taught as an adjunct at Tulane University in Biloxi and Southern University, Baton Rouge Community College, and LSU in Baton Rouge. Dr. Pass has served as Chair of the Feliciana’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and has taught many OLLI classes. She has served as President of the West Feliciana’s Friends of the Library, President of the nonprofit arts organization that she helped found: A Celebration of Literature and Art, Inc., and served as Chair of the Writers and Readers Symposium.

Participation in this program is free and a limited number of loan copies of the books are available in advance. To register for the program or for more information, contact Adult Services Librarian Luis Interiano at (225) 342-7920, ext. 230 or email linteriano@wbrplibrary.us.
